Yerkes Observatory

Yerkes Observatory is a facility of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the University of Chicago. It was established in 1897 on Geneva Lake in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Until the mid-1960's, Yerkes Observatory housed all of the Department's activities. Today the 77-acre, park-like site in southeast Wisconsin provides laboratory space and access to telescopes for research and instruction.

Green Window

Watercolor 11x15"
This is a roof window in Montreal. I found these windows very interesting. They come in so many different forms and colors. Also, windows are mysterios, what is inside? who lives here? what are they doing?

Apostle Island - Bayfield Wisconsin

Plaine Aire in Bayfield Wisconsin from the lake shore park.

From Grunkies - Bayfield Wisconsin

We stayed at Grunkies in Bayfield, this was our view from the little balcony.

Geneva IL, Fox River bridge

We were painting on the Fabian bridge looking towards the Geneva bridge and it was pouring rain. In the middle of the painting the wind switched and it rained onto the bridge and we were soaked.
The lighting made for a good colors and atmosphere.

Buckingham fountain - Chicago

These are the dragon monsters spewing water in the Buckingham fountain in Chicago

The plaine aire painting of these did not work out well. There was too much to capture, I did this from a photo afterwards. One thing about plaine aire, I know it doesn't work all the time.

Fabian Park Fox River

Here are three versions of the same plaine aire painting ...

Watercolor sketches

Here are some small watercolor sketches. This first one is a copy of Hopper's watercolor. Pretty isn't it.

Fabian Park Windmill

This week, we went to Fabian Park, very early in the morning. It was cloudy and gray. I did a quick study that morning, and the drawing for a later coloring.

We went back on a sunny evening and completed the second one.

After George Bellows

This is the George Bellows painting I copied, to practice street sceenes. Too bad we don't have horses in the streets any more.

Chicago River

Last week we started Plaine Aire Sunday, and this Sunday we were in Lake Geneva. I attempted a street scene painting from Starbucks, but it just fell flat. The same day, I bought an excellent book on George Bellows and after copying one of his paintings, I did this from a photo of the Chicago river.George Bellows was not afraid of using black, and he has a point.

The Bean

Plain Aire season has started, and we have made a resolution to paint out every sunday morning. That makes us very much the Sunday Morning painters. We started by heading downtown Chicago, and painting the Bean. This is 8x10 Acryllic on board.

Changing of the guards

8x10" acryllic on masonite

This is from a photo I took at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC of the changing of the guard.

What struck me is the man on the left is older and a little hunched over in his walk. The man on the right is sprite and upright, and has a naiivite in his step and crispy uniform. The older man is in the shadow, the younger man in the light. A true changing of the guard, very deep isn't it?
